Of every symptom people call us about, a burning smell is the one that gets their voice up an octave — and honestly, sometimes it should. But "burning smell from the AC" is really two completely different situations wearing the same coat. One is normal, seasonal, and gone in twenty minutes. The other is an electrical part cooking itself, and the correct move is to shut the system down. Telling them apart takes about ten seconds.
The two smells
“A burning smell is the one symptom I never tell people to ‘keep an eye on.’ If your AC is in cooling mode and it smells like an electrical fire, it’s because something electrical is getting hot enough to smell like fire. Shut it off at the breaker and call me. I’d rather tell you it was nothing than meet you after it wasn’t.”
If it's the bad one: do this
Turn the system off at the thermostat, then flip the AC breaker off in your electrical panel — the thermostat alone doesn't cut all power to the unit. Don't keep resetting it to "test" it; every restart reheats the part that's failing. If you see smoke or the smell is strong and getting stronger, treat it like what it might be and call 911 first, us second. Otherwise, call us — burning-smell calls are emergency calls, day or night.
Other smells, decoded
Musty / dirty socks: mold or bacteria on the coil or in the drain — unpleasant, not dangerous, and a cleaning fixes it. Rotten eggs: if you have gas service, stop and treat it as a possible gas leak — leave and call the gas company. (Most Tampa homes are all-electric, but never gamble on this one.) Sweet/chemical: can be refrigerant — not a fire risk, but a leak to fix. Burning is the only common AC smell that's a "breaker off now" event.
Questions & Answers
Is a burning smell from my AC dangerous?
It can be. A brief dusty burning smell the first time the heat runs is normal dust burning off. A sharp electrical or plastic burning smell while cooling usually means an overheating motor, capacitor, or wiring — turn the system off at the breaker and call.
Why does my heat smell like burning the first cold night?
Dust settles on the heat strips or heat exchanger all summer. The first time the heat kicks on, that dust burns off — it smells like a toaster or a space heater and should fade within about 15 to 30 minutes.
How long should the first-heat burning smell last?
About 15 to 30 minutes, and it should get weaker, not stronger. If it's still going after an hour, gets stronger, or you see smoke, shut the heat off and call.
My AC smells like burning but still works — can I keep using it?
If it's cooling mode and the smell is electrical or chemical, no — "still working" is how overheating parts behave right up until they fail or worse. Shut it off at the breaker and have it looked at.
What does an electrical burning smell from an AC mean?
Usually a part is overheating: a blower or fan motor burning out, a failing capacitor, or wiring insulation melting. All three get worse with use and none of them fix themselves.
